We were looking for something else — 42 Below Fiejoa at Mesa Liquor & Wine Co. on Convoy, San Diego, famous for its selection of beers. They didn't have Fiejoa; instead they showed us Peppercorn Celery vodka by Modern Spirits in a wee-little bottle. We didn't get that, but it did inspire us this Thursday.

We were cooking together — I making baked corn-bread-like goods, and he making braised short-ribs and root vegetables in a foil pouch. Savory smells and sweet tunes all around, we threw together this new cocktail recipe. A bright, fresh green concoction… I LOVE it. It may be my new favorite.

The big question is … What should we call it? Put your suggestions below and let's vote!

 Side Note: Celery Soda

Do you remember Celery Soda? It was supposed to cure all your ailments — or that's how I remember it works. I haven't tried it, but we tracked down a version of the original and ordered it. Can't wait!

The Drink
: Not-Yet-Named Celery Peppercorn Cocktail

CAUTION: Read directions fully before making.
2 oz vodka
dozen peppercorns
1/2 lemon
1 celery stalk
3/4 oz simple syrup

30-45 minutes ahead of time, drop peppercorns into vodka. (You can also do this with a whole bottle days ahead of time.) When peppercorns release their golden hue, you're ready.

Put a sieve over the shaker. Pour in vodka (toss peppercorns). Grate celery (use a blender for a more potent celery flavor) and squeeze lemon into sieve. Push through. Remove sieve and dump pulp. Add syrup and ice to shaker. Shake!

Serve up. Float a celery leaf on top to garnish.

Be smart, safe, and healthy. Drink in moderation. Don't drink and drive, seriously. That's bad. We thank you.

I’m thinking back to my high school horticulture/botany class and the genus (or is it species?) of celery and with that, all I could come up with was this:
    Peppery Apium

Pepper Anderson (if you’re too young to understand, just Google it. Angie Dickinson … purrrrrr.)
The Night Stalker (another 70′s TV reference!)

OMG, I love your Thursday Happy Hour site! hmmmm, what about “Naked Mary” or “Hail Mary” since it has Bloody Mary goodness sans the “bloody”–tomato juice…(isn’t a “hail mary” also a photography term?)

Love the bloody Mary variants! Riffing on the “hail mary”, what about a “pale mary”? Mary’s Stalker?

Still thinking on this….it’s vodka, so a play on something Russian?
    The Spicy Russian?
    The Belligerent Russian?
Hm. Yup. That’s all I got. With a two and four year old, the ol’ mind doesn’t work that well anymore. I’ve been trained to think in terms of apple juice and milk…..

“How about The Stalker because I’m thinking those peppercorns may sneak up on you and well ‘stalk’ for the obvious reason. Love your blog! You two have so much fun going on in that house that it must be running out the front door.”
