The Negroni

The first time I met Jake and his wife Rebekah, Jake was mixing Negroni's to go along with a big Italian feast he made for Chase Jarvis's crew. Shelly arrived later and missed out on the sweet, bitter Italian cocktail. I had had Negroni's before, but never with Jake's secret ingredient. Now Jake's off on his next Big Bicycling Adventure in Italy (he's a wheelin' tour guide for Trek), and I just hope he returns with more secret ingredients for old school cocktails. We'll be ready and waiting.

The Inspiration : Gec's Flair

This is our friend Jake's recipe. Jake says, "In Italy, 'Gec' is the phonetic spelling of 'Jake,' as we discovered
after a shop owner wrote down my name on a bag of bread we ordered."

Jake adds "For a dramatic flair (and added depth), take a small, 1/2 inch by 1
inch piece of orange peel.  Holding it over the poured cocktail between
your index and thumb, light a match and hold it near the orange.
 Squeeze the orange peel, and if done properly, the emerging oils will
ignite and fall into the drink.  Drop the peel in and drink immediately."

The Cocktail: Gec's Mean Negroni

1 1/2 oz gin
1 1/2 oz Campari
1 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
fresh squeezed orange juice, about 1 tablespoon

Either pour over ice and stir for a full 10 seconds or shake over ice and strain into a cocktail shaker. Serve with an orange slice.
