Out of Our Comfort Zone
We sailed across the Pacific, winds at 30 knots, jib fully satisfied, two kids securely wrapped in life jackets and their mothers’ arms. Yes, plastic baggies nearby. Angled and windblown, the journey was pure anticipation — for the island, for dolphins and whales, and for Buffalo’s Milk.
Hours later, Santa Catalina surges into clear view, the mountains taller and drier
than expected. I use the binoculars to scrub the hillside for bison,
mule deer, or bald eagles. No luck. But we did find Buffalo’s Milk.
|Buffalo’s Milk – The Original (read full directions before making)
1.5 oz. vodka
1 oz. creme de banana
1 oz. creme de cacao
1 oz. milk1 oz. Kalua or coffee liquor
sprinkle of nutmegIn a blender with ice, add first four ingredients. Blend till frothy. Pour into a tall glass. Drizzle Kalua on top. Add whipped cream and sprinkle of nutmeg. (The bartender in Two Harbors, Catalina, called it ground buffalo chips. Funny guy.)
Note: It looks like this used to be made with real bananas and two kinds of creme de cacao, dark and light.

Drink only in moderation. Enjoy your summer vacation cocktails responsibly. Don’t drink too much before sailing or operating any kind of motorized or fast-moving ocean vessel. Especially Jet Skis. Especially near kayakers. Come on. Don’t you see the wake you’re making? Imbécile.
