It started out “hot”, then soon became “ridiculous” and quickly moved into “absurd.” The thermometer sneered 110ºF yet we were still outside, still trying to enjoy ourselves.

We gave in. Time for a cooling dip in the pool and an air-conditioned nap in the room.

Happy hour arrived but poolside it was still in triple digits. We opted for an indoor Skype session with friends while sipping Suffering Bastards. Because I was. But starting to feel much better.

The “Not-So-Tiki” Tiki DrinkI discovered the Suffering Bastard while thumbing through The Great Tiki Drink Book. I do love the tiki culture and enjoy a mai tai or two but for the most part tropical drinks are just too sweet for my palate. When I saw the Suffering Bastard, a recipe using my two favorite spirits, I was excited to try it. I was not disappointed.

June weather in Palm Springs is hit or miss. We missed this time but still had a fantastic stay at our favorite little spot The Desert Star Hotel. Davy and Walter* once again outdid themselves providing hospitality and comfort. Even though it was 110º, we still felt like the coolest couple in the desert.

CAUTION: Drinking really delicious drinks in 110ºF heat can be dangerous. They go down fast but so will you. Stay hydrated! Water is usually best for heat no matter how delicious the tiki drinks are.

*Davy and Walter are no longer there, as of 2012.
