We squeak into Jayne’s Gastropub just before the kitchen closes. I know this rarely goes over well with the back of the house so we do our best to order quickly and go with the simpler dishes on the menu. And a cocktail, of course.
I’m a fan of bourbon cocktails but Shelly rarely goes for the stuff. That’s why I was surprised when she ordered the O. Henry, a bourbon based rocks drink. “It has ginger beer” she says. That does the trick.
The O. Henry is a wonderful balance of spicy Buffalo Trace bourbon, Benedictine and Fever Tree ginger beer. Served in a highball on the rocks, this drink is the perfect answer to a warm spring evening.
Ginger beers, ales, and liqueurs are a great way to add a blast of fresh flavor to just about any spirit.
Our first experience was the Dark and Stormy at the Bitter End Yacht Club, BVI. This was before many bars stateside adopted the recipe and began using the mixer. Now many are available, some spicier than others. We like Bundaberg and Fever Tree and Reed’s is widely available at most grocers.
|The Jim & Della Cocktail
The O. Henry is a simple rocks drink that you can mix quickly and will please many. If you have the time and the ingredients, try our variation here:
Combine all ingredients in a shaker full of ice, shake well and serve up with a twist.
CAUTION: The story of Jim and Della (“Gift of the Magi,” by O. Henry) is full of irony and twists. Enjoy this drink responsibly to avoid your own twisted ending.
