Now that we’ve wrapped up the holiday season and gotten back to work, it seems like spring should be just around the corner. But even in San Diego, it’s been brrr lately.
One chilly night we met our dear friends visiting from Minneapolis for dinner at the Brooklyn Girl Eatery in Mission Hills. While our Midwestern guests were mocking us for being cold, we ordered drinks. I enjoyed a stellar Aviation Cocktail. Shelly had the Well-Made Cocktail. Then, to my surprise, wouldn’t stop talking about it. And could we make it at home?
So, with spring weather further away than I’d prefer (although maybe not, today was a fabulous 71 degrees), we present our version of the Well-Made Cocktail, a libation that will surely bring a little springtime to your happy hour.
The Well Made Cocktail (Thursday Happy Hour version)
- 3 oz. good quality gin (Plymouth would be a nice choice)
- Fresh squeezed juice of 1 lime
- 1/2 oz. vanilla simple syrup (St. Germaine would also work very nicely here)
- 5 sprigs of fresh cilantro (top leafy sections, about 3″ long)
- 1/4″ slice of jalapeno
- 2 thin slices of cucumber (about 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick)
Combine the cilantro, jalapeno slice, and one cucumber slice in a shaker or mixing glass. Gently muddle ingredients to extract the flavors. Add ice cubes, gin, lime juice, and vanilla syrup (or St. Germaine) and shake very well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a thin cucumber slice.
