Sure the bottle is fancy, all that raffia stuff, big Italian words, crests all over. But what does it taste like? It’s called Maraschino and you might assume it takes after those cocktail cherries and that awful sticky syrup they are packed in. You’d be wrong. Very wrong.
I’ve been aware of Luxardo Maraschino for while but it wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized how special this stuff is. What it does to a common cocktail is pure magic. It mixes equally well with clear or amber spirits, it’s sweet but not too sweet, and it will become your favorite new secret ingredient.
Try a splash in a Gimlet, add a dash to a Manhattan, or go with what my pals at Polite Provisions did and create your own signature drink like the Ken Burns Effect. But if you’re a purist, I recommend the Last Word Cocktail.
The Last Word Cocktail
- 3/4 oz. gin
- 3/4 oz. green Chartreuse
- 3/4 oz. maraschino liqueur
- 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
Combine all ingredients in a shaker full of ice, shake well, strain into a well chilled glass.
