Salneval Albariño 2007 Spanish White Wine

Posted on Jan 27, 2010 in Wine | No Comments

We bundled up and headed downtown to Subo—named for the Filipino word meaning “to feed.” It’s an apt name, considering we ordered nearly everything off the menu—including a citrusy glass of Spanish white wine for me.

Marietta Old Vine Red, Lot No. 50

The house wine at most restaurants is a cheap, unnamed bottle. At my neighborhood restaurant, the house red is something different. Inexpensive, yes. But also delicious. Marietta is a new friend from an old vine.

Social connections are the key to survival in the Minnesota tundra. A glass of crisp Torrontés, an affordable white wine from Argentina, and some fresh, yummy guacamole doesn’t hurt, either.

Wines tend to go in and out of our wine cabinet within a few weeks. Except for one—a 2000 Francis Coppola Director’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon we picked up ten years ago while wine tasting in Napa Valley. The two week countdown to Christmas is on, so it’s time to pull out the cookie recipes of Christmases past and get to work measuring, mixing, and rolling. First, though, I’ll need to do a bit of simmering–mulled wine, that is.

Penfolds Koonunga Hills Shiraz-Cabernet 2006

The Shiraz/Cabernet blend from Australia was served in a homey, stemless wine glass, a fitting touch for the cozy surroundings. On first taste, I was disappointed. But that all changed—after the food arrived.

2006 Carmel Road Chardonnay

There’s just something about the savory smell of turkey stock boiling away on the stove all day that brings me back to my own childhood, reminding me of Mom’s cooking. It makes the house perfectly warm and cozy, a respite from the growing chill outside that December brings.
Now, all I needed was the ideal wine to pair with my traditional post-holiday turkey noodle soup.
